  • Step-By-Step Guide

  • Step 1.

    Fee Proposal

To ensure that we can work to your budget and within your timescales, the first thing we like to do is chat with you about your lighting project.

The aim of this discussion is for you to give us as much information as possible about the spaces to be lit, including: room style, ceiling height, elevations and furniture layout. For this we'll need architectural drawings, preferably at 1:50. It is also important for us to have a confirmed furniture layout for each room if possible, this allows us to design the scheme around your usage of the space. We can then provide you with a quote to supply a full lighting design package, completely tailored to your project. Our fee proposal will include for one set of revised drawings. Any subsequent revisions will be chargeable - please see the Pricing tab below for details.

  • Step 2.

    Initial Meeting

Once the proposal has been agreed in principal, the initial meeting with one of our designers will be held either on site or in our studio. The aim of this meeting is for you to tell us about any specific requirements you have.

Most importantly, it's for you to tell us how you want your space to feel. Ideally, to ensure you receive the exact lighting scheme you want, the design should be carried out prior to your project's electrical first fix.

Once you're happy with the fee proposal and initial meeting, we'll require a 50% pre-payment in order to start work on your scheme.

To book your initial lighting design consultation meeting, contact us at [email protected] or on 01189 882294.

  • Step 3.

    Design & Specification

We'll provide you with a full set of first draft Auto-CAD drawings, as well as a lighting specification that details all luminaires, fittings and transformers. We'll also include design notes and positioning details. We will run through our first draft lighting design with you either on-site, at our showroom or via a video conference call - all included in the fee proposal.

All feedback from this meeting will be used for one set of revisions to the design, which is also included. Any subsequent revisions after will be chargeable at our hourly rate - please see the Pricing tab below. Once all design revisions are completed and you are happy with the scheme, we will supply you with your final design package, which includes

    • the final lighting design in Auto-CAD format
    • the lighting specification
    • a lighting load schedule
    • a quotation for supplying the lighting fittings (if applicable)

Where required, we'll include dimmer or scene control options for maximum flexibility. For an additional cost (please see the Pricing tab below), we can also provide you with a Dialux lighting calculation - creating a 3D, real time visualisation of how your lighting will look once it's installed. Or, if you'd prefer, we can set up realistic scene creation for you to view in our studio.

Once you receive the design package from us, you can use it for tender and installation purposes and we'll be on hand to answer any questions you or your contractor may have. Typically, you'll receive the design package 15 working days after we have received all the relevant information from you. For smaller jobs a quicker turnaround may be possible, just ask us.

  • Step 4.

    Ongoing Site Visits & Revisions

At this point we will typically liaise with your electrical contractor on site to ensure the installation of your lighting scheme goes as smoothly as possible. Usually this includes a run through of the finalised lighting design and discussing the load schedule, specifications and lighting products to ensure that everyone is clear about the installation phase.

In addition, we're available from Monday to Friday to provide further technical help via phone, email or on a video conference call - all included in the fee proposal.

If further site visits are needed prior to commissioning, our designer will be happy to do this. These may be chargeable and this would be at our normal hourly rate – please see the Pricing tab below for details. Any revisions required will also usually be charged at our hourly rate.

  • Step 5.

    Commissioning

Once all lighting has been installed, we'll visit site to ensure everything's been fitted to specification and is exactly the way you want it.

This final walkthrough will ensure that everything has been installed as per the lighting scheme and is performing as specified.

  • Step 6.

    After Commissioning

After your project is completed, we'll provide you with a whole year's worth of support. Beyond that, we'll always be available to help you with anything you need whenever we can.

We source the highest quality LED components available, which are usually supplied with at least a 5 year warranty. Your specification will include details of the manufacturer's warranty and guarantee for each fitting, as this can vary from company to company.

  • Further Information

  • Step 1.

    Building Regs & Energy Efficiency

If you’re unsure how much low energy lighting you’ll need, just ask us and we can provide you with this information.

For example, a new build requires a minimum of 75% of fixed lights on a project to meet a minimum low energy requirement.

For a light fitting to qualify as a low energy product, the luminous efficacy is required to be 45 lumens per 1 watt whilst maintaining a total output higher than 400 lumens. Any light fittings that use less than 5 watts are automatically excluded from the 75% low energy requirement, as they are already deemed to be low energy.

You can be sure that all our lighting schemes comply fully with current building regulations. We’ll provide a Part L compliancy pack with your lighting schedule for you to give to your building control officer. This compliancy pack ensures that the goods we have supplied you with for your project meet the required energy efficiency rating.

    What our customers say...

    "Don't hesitate
Chris recently did a wonderful lighting design for me at very short notice. Was always easily reachable and organised zoom meetings during the current lock down, allowing us to proceed swiftly. I was provided with an excellent, electrician-friendly set of plans that also took into account non-lighting related power feeds. My electrician was very pleased. The lights that Chris specified were also outstanding. All for a very reasonable price. Thoroughly recommend." - M.B.

"A very positive and collaborative experience
I spoke with Chris @ Darklight who was extremely helpful. He reviewed my lighting plans (I'm an interior designer so produced these myself), ensured I had the right levels of light for the moods and scenes I was trying to create and even checked I had the lights the correct distance from wardrobes & tall cabinets. The task of scheduling was taken out of my hands and expertly put together in a matter of days. A very positive and collaborative experience." - P. Rae
